Ken Nakazawa
Ando Gallery is pleased to announce a new installation of work by Ken Nakazawa. Born in Tokyo in 1970, Nakazawa studied oil painting and completed his postgraduate degree at Tama Art University in 1994. He participated in the 1999 group exhibition “MOT Annual 1999: Modest Radicalism” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo and also participated in “Yokohama 2001: International Triennale of Contemporary Art at Pacifico” Yokohama.

Nakazawa has received acclaim as an installation artist for works composed of thin and wispy materials such as wire and nylon filaments that integrate themselves into the spaces of their venues.

This exhibition marks the first time in two years for Nakazawa to present a new installation. Twenty-six wooden poles, each 2.5 meters long and colored with white paint, stand randomly in the space. The entire installation is composed by connecting the upper part of the poles to five wire rods stretching from one wall to the other. These wooden poles look like regular white wood, however closer inspection reveals that they are each finely detailed. To create this effect, the poles are joined together, coated with cement beds, and painted white before being sanded, giving the wood a slightly distorted expression. While Nakazawa’s previous works have focused on the horizontal, this installation emphasizes the vertical line. Nakazawa found inspiration in symbols of heaven (God) and the ground (humanity), creating a sacred column that vertically joins them together. His completed work begins there and invites the viewer to walk through the space freely. As the viewer moves, the scenery changes, allowing for the experience of light, shadow, the resonance of the standing wood, and the transformation of the nature of the space.
