Now, Taiwan - Artists of Taiwan Academy of Fine Arts

The Shoto Museum of Art
Finished
Known as the beautiful island Taiwan has seen many exciting developments in its art scene over recent years. Taiwan inherited the traditions of Chinese art but under the Japanese occupation this underwent a striking transformation through the introduction of Western and Japanese modernism through the newly established education system. After the war there was a great rise in students traveling to study in Europe, America and Japan, bringing back with them the popularity of abstract expressionism, fusing with Taiwanese folk art and Chinese art, observing new developments in multiple directions. Furthermore as of 1970, while struggling under difficult political and international conditions, Taiwan came to assert its identity and point towards a new direction. This exhibition draws upon this past to reveal the very present of Taiwanese art today.
