Toshio Matsuo
Toshio Matsuo (b. 1926) is a major figure in today’s world of Japanese painting. A Nagasaki native and current Yokohama resident, he currently occupies the important post of Director of the Japan Art Institute. After an early period focusing on themes of anxiety, Matsuo went on to produce bird-and-flower paintings, portraits, and Venetian landscapes. Featuring distinct atmospheres, his works demonstrate a lineage of contemporary Japanese painting influenced by his teacher, Taikan Yokoyama. In Matsuo’s first large-scale retrospective ever in Kanagawa Prefecture and nationwide in four years, around 40 paintings from his early period through recent works are on display.
