Johanna Tagada
The body of work of the French Interdisciplinary artist and abstract painter Johanna Tagada has been strongly linked with the notion of happiness and feeling of wellness. Tagada attempts to make the viewers of her work feel less anxious and more positive. In her paintings Tagada tries by the use of soft colours and shapes to relax her audience. She derives most of her inspirations from her daily life and experiences, but also from the cultural heritages of the past, such as folklore art. Her artworks are often semi-autobiographical and related to feelings. To create a dialogue with the viewers is also a position she adopts in various of her works. In July 2014, at Utrecht Art Book shop and NOW IdeA gallery in Tokyo, Tagada opens the installation “Épistolaire imaginaire わけあうことば” . The artist invites the visitors but also her friends in Tokyo to leave her a written note in one of the notebooks as part of the installation. The audience is given the task
to write (anonymously or not) a short memory of a moment of simple happiness. In exchange for this note, each participant is given a folded letter written by Tagada herself. The letters are all positive, encouraging, simple but yet powerful.
In 2011 and 2012 Tagada invited the readers of the blog “Bonjour Johanna” to fill up a form regarding happiness and love, the answers she gathered helped her to build her work. This time again she is questioning her audience.
