Savage, sexy electronica. Unstoppable rhythms. Furiously revolving dancers jumping on shaking, rubbery hands and feet, moving at skater-like speeds. The audience is instantly swept up in the intoxicating craze. To choreographers François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea, disco has been a cultural quest and way of honing playfulness since their teens. Their creativity has resulted in an explosion of cutting-edge disco music, super-DJ and drag queens shows, and diverse dances. “Disco” isn’t quite the right word for their productions, though. Their events are more like mass music halls invoking modern dance pioneers like Loie Fuller and Isadora Duncan. Their groundbreaking, disco-inspired dance has even been stoking the debate over dance and entertainment laws.
