As part of a series of events to commemorate 400 years since the Keicho diplomatic mission from Japan to Spain, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo presents an exhibition featuring the works of 27 artists selected from the contemporary art collection of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC).
While realism emerged in 17th Century Spain through exponents such as Velázquez and Goya, and was renewed in the Madrid Realism movement of the 1980’s, as represented by the work of Antonio López García, the “real” of Spanish art which is proposed here is not concerned with imitation. The “real” here more reflects a desire to pinpoint reality, even to the extent of embodying the surreal and the fantastical, often resulting in vivid exaggeration (esperpento) of everyday scenes or things, generated from the unique and highly charged relationship between life and death.
The works in this exhibition convey, through realism, the heaviness of life that is underpinned by an activated death, a conflict of excesses and shadows which opens up a path to a “real” beyond that of the globalized, networked world.
