People of every era have been fascinated by gold and silver and their brilliance and beauty have long been employed in Japanese art, from illustrated scrolls to folding screens these metals have been utilized across numerous genres. While tracing the creative use of gold and silver materials by modern and contemporary Nihonga artists, this exhibition also reveals their inspirations in sources ranging from Heian period decorative papers to Rimpa School paintings from the Edo period. In addition, it explores the artists’ efforts to reproduce and reinterpret the techniques used in those classic works and to focus their skills upon the innovative use of gold and silver.
