Captain Cook’s Voyage and Banks’ Florilegium

Bunkamura Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Joseph Banks et al.
The flowers of the Pacific that bloom in all their beauty 200 years after the voyage. Banks’ Florilegium was printed using copperplates that Joseph Banks (1743-1820) had prepared for publishing the results of James Cook’s (1728-1779) first voyage to the Pacific Ocean, which began in 1768 and lasted almost 3 years, with Banks himself accompanying the voyage in order to collect plants. This exhibition will display 120 beautiful copperplate prints selected from Banks’ Florilegium, an artistic result of botanical research (743 prints in total), along with material related to James Cook and ethnographic artifacts from the Pacific region. Here audiences are provided with a valuable opportunity to learn about the untold side of Cook’s voyages of exploration, such as Banks’ passion for hunting unknown plants and the activity of the painter Sydney Parkinson (circa 1745-1771), who also joined the voyage.
