Takako Hojo
Takako Hojo shakes up our senses and overrides our pre-programmed perceptions through a practice which examines the world not from the position of the viewer looking out, but of the world breaking in, permeating the skin and exposing the body to the elements. The things she captures in her acts of depiction are not the shapes of things as such, but afterimages of the forces she has received, banked as quantities of energy. And in so doing she challenges our habitual assimilation of the world, rather interpreting the outer phenomenon through its impression upon our surfaces. Recently she has shown an increasing interest in light. Her present works use explosive colors to traffic light into the sensory organs, using light to give her picture planes the solid and subjective structures of tableaux and recommend her as a painter with an exciting future.
