For its 10th exhibition, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo presents a new commission by the acclaimed British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen.
Born in London in 1969, Steve McQueen started making short films during his college years. He has received numerous awards and honors famous worldwide, including the Turner Prize (1999), Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE, 2002), and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, 2011). His work has been collected by museums throughout the world, including the Tate Gallery in London, MoMA in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne Georges Pompidou in Paris. In 2008, McQueen made his feature film debut with “Hunger,” which brought him great success with various awards such as the Caméra d’Or Award in Cannes. His latest film, “12 Years a Slave,” won the 2014 Academy Award for best picture, as well as two other Oscars for best supporting actress and best adapted screenplay.
Usually created with an extreme economy of means, his works hover between the specific and the universal, the literal and the abstract, evading definition and multiplying experiential and interpretive possibilities. Also, certain iconic McQueen works stem from unflinching observation of the body— often his own— with ambiguous carnal undertones. Others draw from a potent, at times bleak, political consciousness addressing specific historical moments. This new commission, created with the support of Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo and making its global debut, draws from a more abstract vein extant in his work, delivering the public into a purely sensory space in which the experience becomes an intimate form of “self revelation,” something hidden inside such as thoughts, wishes, and ways of thinking.
