Taro Okamoto’s Okinawa

Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki
Finished

Artists

Taro Okamoto et al.
Taro Okamoto recorded his impressions of native Okinawan cultures during a late-1959 trip in his “Essay on Okinawan Culture: A Forgotten Japan” (published in 1961). This visit had a profound impact on his later creative activities, as did another trip to the Okinawan island of Kudakajima in 1966, during which he witnessed the women-only Izaiho Shinto ritual held once every twelve years. What exactly was Okinawa to Okamoto? Introducing works from before and after these two trips, this exhibition attempts to understand Okinawa’s significance to this artist. There is also a display touching on the influence of Mircea Eliade, a Romanian scholar of shamanism.
