The Arts, Forms, and Sounds Passed Down Through Traditional Japanese Musical Instruments

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished
Traditional Japanese musical instruments are the ultimate artifacts, combining sound-producing structures with the beauty of objects. In contrast to Western musical instruments, which are usually mass-produced industrial products, the complex methods of crafting traditional Japanese instruments are still carried out by hand. This exhibition introduces the painstaking techniques of building these instruments in pursuit of the wisdom and skill that goes into their creation. There will also be demonstrations of how shamisen and wadaiko drum are made.
