Kokutani, Kakiemon and Nabeshima Ware

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
Although the birthplace of Kokutani-style Imari ware remains controversial, there is no doubt that early Imari over-glazed, multi-color porcelain was manufactured in the Hizen area of today’s Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures. Kokutani-style Imari ware is characterized by deep colors and dynamic compositions influenced by Chinese five-color porcelain.

Early Kokutani-style Imari ware led to the Kakeimon-style of Imari ware, which appealed to European market demand. Its technique was applied to elegant Nabeshima ware, which was favored as gifts to the Tokugawa Shogun family.
Please enjoy the beauty of Hizen porcelain in the Kokutani and Kakiemon styles, as well as Nabeshima ware.
