The artist JR began putting up photographs on the exteriors of buildings at age 17. Since then, he has been posting walls with enormous pictures of people around the world living with oppression, poverty, and discrimination. As part of his “Inside Out Project,” in 2012 he traveled around the disaster-stricken Tohoku region in a special truck equipped with a portrait camera and a giant printer, taking pictures of people and displaying these photos in the streets. Transforming streets around the globe into galleries for everyone, his works present regional problems to the world and open up new lines of communication.
