Shingo Francis
Shingo Francis, who has pursued the possibilities of abstract painting throughout his career, has a distinct style incorporating deep blue monochrome coloring and vivid expressions of light. His most well-known work, a series of paintings in deep blue monochrome, features a rich spirituality. Francis created the pitch-black quality of his entrancing signature series through the repeated application of multiple layers of blue paint, observable upon close inspection. In “Bound for Eternity,” a painting resembling a strip of light, the monochrome coloring emanates a sense of freedom that quietly builds in the viewers’ heart. Minimalistic expression, the trademark style of Francis’ paintings, follows the movements of Abstract Expressionism practiced by artists such as Ad Reinhardt and Barnett Newman, yet also contains an elegance and tranquility rooted in Eastern philosophy. Francis’ color sensibilities strongly reflect growing up in the vast, bright spaces of California. This exhibition presents works from Francis’ “Bound for Eternity” and blue monochrome series, including new works.
