Specters, Ghosts, and Sorcerers in Ukiyo-e

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Kunisada Utagawa et al.
The world of Yokai Ukiyo-e prints encompasses specters such as demons, long-nosed “tengu” goblins, “tsuchigumo” demon spiders, ghosts like Okiku-san and Oiwa-san, sorcerers that can control snakes and toads, and monsters that frighten viewers, as well as those that are unexpectedly humorous and elicit laughs. This exhibition is divided into three categories: “Specters”, “Ghosts”, and “Sorcerers”, giving viewers their fill of Yokai-e. Around 250 works are displayed, including those by ukiyo-e artists such as Hokusai Katsushika, Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Moronobu Hishikawa, and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka. The many monsters of these pieces await your visit.

Part I (Specters) Jul. 1–Jul. 27, Part II (Ghosts) Aug. 1–Aug. 26, Part III (Sorcerers) Aug. 30–Sep. 25
