Since gaining wide spread recognition with his video installation “Perspective of the Globe Jungle” which was broadcast on NHK’s “Digital Stadium” in 2001, Yasuhiro Suzuki has been playing an active part across various fields of art and design. Works such as “Blinking Leaves”, “Constellation of Departure”, presented at Haneda Airport, and Setouchi Triennale featured “Ship of the Zipper” have brought him popular acclaim as he works between art museums and public spaces in a site-specific approach. “Neighborhood Globe” introduces major works from Suzuki’s oeuvre as well as some of his latest productions, shown alongside “Flip Book Manga Shopping Streets in Mito” shining a new perspective on the of Mito. In a reinterpretation of “Perspective of the Globe Jungle,” his basic philosophy of production is revealed in the idea of being a part of the earth (the bigger whole) while remaining close to one’s neighborhood. His stylish, highly sensitive works respond to context and the phenomenon of daily life most often overlooked, bringing to our eyes the familiarity and surprise of the earth which we are seldom conscious of.
