Burnt Ruins and Paint Brushes - War and Post-War Through the Eyes of Artists

Itabashi Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Chozaburo Inoue, Masaaki Terada, Saichiro Tanaka, Takashi Fukai et al.
Known as the Ikebukuro Montparnasse, Itabashi has long been a hub for artists especially during the mid 20th century, with the likes of Chozaburo Inoue and Masaaki Terada all gathering upon this district. This exhibition takes a look at artists working through the chaos of the war time and the reflections and developments seen in thee post war period. From avant-garde work which became increasingly difficult to show during the war time, to examples which were given gallery space during this era, to depictions of the post war ruins and human casualties, to the new work which exploded upon the scene in the post war period, as well as the rise of reportage work dealing with social problems, this exhibition examines these two periods through an array of lenses further contextualized through the accompaniment of work from Saichiro Tanaka, Tozaburo Nagai and the wooden sculpture of Takashi Fukai
