“Absolute Métier - The Conditions of a Masterpiece”

Musee Hamaguchi Yozo / Yamasa Collection
Finished

Artists

Yozo Hamaguchi, Georges Rouault, Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Egon Schiele, Kikuji Kawada et al.
A masterpiece is a work of art which exceeds the limits of its age, taking on a timeless energy and freshness which continues to absorb viewers even today. The examination of any famed work shows a particular feat of crafted skill (métier) and reveals a rich dialogue formed between artist and material. And yet this respect for material is not merely limited to the field of art, but may be seen in numerous forms within the creative practices of music, photography, literature and the such like. This exhibition celebrates the high quality of skill drawn upon in the production of copperplate prints, silk screen prints and photography, while also questioning the very meaning of métier and material. Taking the work of internationally renowned artist Yozo Hamaguchi as its starting point this exhibition presents over 50 works of modern and contemporary art from around the world.
