Recently, we have witnessed a seeming boom in small scale, independent, often artist run residencies of increasing diversification and specialization, catering to individual artitsts’ needs. In response to this, the first day of the 3 day series of events designed to reconsider the very basics of AIR takes place at 3331 Arts Chiyoda. In the first session, AIR networking organizations in Japan will gather and discuss the current situation and the possibility of AIR network in Japan and abroad.
Thousands of artist in residencies exist across the world, perhaps they are as numerous as the stars, but how do we join the lines between these infinite dots? Major networks such as Res-Artis and Trans Artists have not only mapped out many of these complex points of light, but have also brought them into new relationships, with each star contributing to a galaxy. This enables us to navigate the constellations of art in residencies on a global scale, but simultaneously there are networks which focus upon the importance of sharing local knowledge, with examples such as AIR-J, J-AIR and Move arts Japan in Japan. How did these networks come to form and what is their purpose? How can we as artists and cultural practitioners make use of them? And what merit do they bring to members who subscribe to these networks? Join leaders of established networks and those just in the early stages of launching new initiatives as we discuss what can be achieved through such forms, what they should aim towards and how they may contribute to the strengthening and expansion of AIR engagements.
