Light is a running theme in the work of the Seoul-based artist Ligyung, fulfilling the important role of redefining the relationship between the visible and invisible. Ligyung’s installations question the limits of what we can see, shaking our absolute faith in visual perception— a belief summed up by the maxim “seeing is believing.”
This exhibition presents two installations concerned with light. In an all-white space evocative of a vacuum, “The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” (2001) conjures the instinctive human urge to see what we cannot. Using “forbidden fruit” as a metaphor, this room filled with dazzling light seems to cast a halo on our extreme desire to see. Meanwhile, Ligyung’s new work “Kiss of the Serpent” focuses on the act of expressing the invisible. Using the changes in natural light unique to the Maison Hermès space, Ligyung aims to “portray the light of the sun,” which we cannot see, but exists nonetheless. Featuring sound and floor space that takes on a mother of pearl-like appearance, these installations offer new discoveries of perception.
