Delicious Art - The Meeting of Food and Art

Yokosuka Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Paul Cézanne, Jean-François Millet, Tsuguharu Fujita, Kaoru Ueda, Paramodel et al.
While the act of eating is something we must do on a daily basis in order to survive, it is also something which is to be enjoyed. If we trace through the history of art we also discover ample examples of the depiction of food from the religious scenes of the last supper, to still life paintings of fruit and vegetables, we may appreciate food in art upon many different levels. This diversity was only increased as Cezanne made still life a platform for new experimentation and even in Japan we may see in the course of nihonga, oil painting and other forms of contemporary art how food has continued to be a popular motif. Over a series of 5 sections this exhibition examines the position of food within art through a collection of traditional Western examples of art and contemporary Japanese expressions.
