Nao Tsuda
Nao Tsuda’s “Reborn” series, started in 2010, features photographs of Bhutan, which preserves its heritage as the world’s only country with Tibetan Buddhism as its national religion. Cultivating a respect for gods, buddhas, and the natural world since ancient times, Tibetan Buddhism plays a profound role in its practitioners’ lifestyles. As a photographer, Tsuda explores the origins of Buddhism and the current state of the faith. Referring to the Buddhist belief in reincarnation, the “Reborn” series captures on film Bhutan’s many temples and monasteries, the monks who live there, and its religious festivals. These images spotlight faith and tradition intimately related to the severe Himalayan environment, which continue to be protected and passed down through the generations.
