Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Conservation Exhibition

The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts

The roots of Japanese painting, nihonga are clearly to be found in Chinese painting, yet in China, with the continued practice of ink painting, the emergence of nihonga like practices was slow to surface. And while there have been various examples of China studying the development of these processes from Japan, there has been very rare opportunity for Japan to study the roots of nihonga in Chinese painting through the work of Chinese experts. Here the Tokyo University of the Arts attempts to take greater steps towards this exchange by inviting respected Chinese contemporary artist He Jiaying to provide new insights into Chinese painting and push art education to the next level. As the state of art conservation continues to evolve in Japan there is an even greater need to trace the very foundations of Eastern painting and learn from traditional techniques of the region, with Chinese art representing a key line in this trail.
