Creating visual representations of problems is one art’s social roles. There is surprisingly little about ourselves and our social institutions that goes overlooked, and most of what does is comprised of what we cannot see or see only partially. By wielding the power to create images of these issues, artists help us visualize and address them. The ability to take a step back and gain a panoramic view of these problems is essential to visualizing them. This process can be considered an “out-of-body experience.”
“Out-of-Body Experience” is an annual exhibition exploring the impact of the unseen. The art of last year’s show examined the societal influence of a separation between the material and spiritual from psychological and technological standpoints. It portrayed the supposedly indivisible relationship of art and religion and the merits and demerits of the fantasies that contemporary technology continues to produce as material worlds detached from spirituality. Moving one step beyond framing problems of the future, this year’s exhibition takes up the idea of “love and its simulacra,” probing forms of love in contemporary society.
