Started in 2009, Roppongi Art Night is a one-night art extravaganza held in the streets of Roppongi. An array of commercial and cultural organizations present not only art, but also design, music, film, performance, and more. By unifying Roppongi in art, Roppongi’s image as a place of culture becomes stronger, creating a new model for community building in the metropolis of Tokyo.

Roppongi Art Night 2014 explores the physical aspects of art, which involves the eyes, ears, hands, feet, head, and heart in its creation. Its main events send positive messages needed in the Japan of today, three years after the March 2011 disasters and ahead of the 2020 Olympics, encouraging visitors to socialize, talk, laugh, feel, eat, and debate. One featured project is Yoshinari Nishio’s collaboration with residents and students, “One Body,” which has created enormous patchwork quilts from used clothing. There is also a lineup of interactive parades and performances at Roppongi Hills, Tokyo Midtown, and other Roppongi areas led by director Kim Ito, as well as discussions featuring artists.
