The Materials of Western Painting

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Gustave Courbet, Samuel Palmer et al.
Paintings are made with a variety of paints and materials. A look at the history of painting in light of its techniques and materials reveals trends have differed according to era and country, and that changes in materials have been brought about by scientific progress. Materials are also chosen according to the skills and personal preferences of artists. This exhibition approaches Western painting from the standpoints of materials and techniques. Exploring how paintings are made, it is a good place to start learning about the creative process from a material perspective.
