Keiko Minami
The landscapes of Keiko Minami’s copperplate prints are mysterious yet somehow nostalgic, reminiscent of places one has seen sometime in the past. In her school days, Minami poured her effusive creativity into oil painting, poetry, and children’s stories. She began to make copperplate prints in earnest after meeting Yozo Hamaguchi. In 1954, at the age of 43, she traveled to Paris, where she created a large number of works. Common motifs in her art include castles, trees, birds, and young girls. Recurring frequently as if characters in a children’s story, these motifs seem quiet and aloof, yet express longing, joy, and sorrow. In recent years Minami’s work has found many fans across generations and genres, which can be attributed to the good feelings her art brings people. This exhibition focuses on works featured in the book, “A Ship’s Voyage— The Poems, Children’s Stories, and Copperplate Prints of Keiko Minami”, published by Chikumashobo in March. On display are some 50 copperplate prints, small works including pen illustrations exhibited for the first time, and several unique drawings from the artist’s sketchbook.
