For the people of Japan, woodblock printing is a deeply familiar form of artistic expression. After a wave of Ukiyo-e in the Edo era firmly established its techniques as the art of the common people, it became a popular method for the production of decorative “Chiyogami” paper and shop flyers. In the Taisho period, the bold “Sosaku-hanga” prints and the intricate patterns and vivid colors of the “Shinhanga” prints emerged, fusing woodblock printing’s pliant style with modern design for book covers and picture envelopes. With its continual merging of tradition and innovation, Japanese woodblock printing came under the international spotlight after WWII and enjoyed renewed popularity with within Japan as a wide range of artists took up this printing method. Here the Yokohama Museum of Art reviews the history of this form from the Edo period up to the current day with an exhibition of 220 works selected from its 1600-strong collection of woodblock prints, celebrating the accessibility and uniqueness of this medium.
