Written by Asao Takamori (aka Ikki Kajiwara) and illustrated by Tetsuya Chiba, Ashita no Joe first appeared as a manga in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 1967 and inspired a generation, coming to be reinterpreted as an animation and film and now nearly 40 years on attracting new fans. The vision of Joe Yabuki as a fighter who would never give in no matter how much he was beaten became a symbol for a generation who wished to stand against the social order established by their elders. His influence was so far reaching that it overcame the bounds of fiction, with the Yadogo hijackers of 1970 claiming “We are Ashita no Joe!” and Shuji Terayama holding an actual funeral service on the demise of Joe’s enemy Toru Rikiishi. This exhibition features around 100 original illustrations of Tetsuya Chiba shown alongside the work of key figures of theatre and performance such as Shuji Terayama, Tatsumi Hijikata and Yutokutaishi Akiyama who shared in the age of Ashita no Joe.
