Presenting “It’s All Rheydt,” German artist Gregor Schneider’s visual documentation of a project in Calcutta. Schneider was invited to the Bengal region in 2011 and participated in the annual Durga Puja (Goddess Durga) festival. “It’s All Rheydt” refers to the town where he lived and is also a play on the word light, a key theme running throughout his diverse works. In this project, Schneider assisted local artisans in using local materials to create an enormous pandal— a fabricated structure used in religious ceremonies— in the streets of Rheydt before bringing and installing it upright in Calcutta for Durga Puja. The festival concluded with the Goddess statue inside the pandal being submerged and floating away in the river. Schneider later retrieved this statue and exhibited it in Germany the following year. Along with these works, this exhibition displays photographs from Schneider’s “Totes Haus ur” series, which received the Leone d’Oro Award at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
