“Sliding Doors of the Kano School - Rokuro Hara Collection”

Hara Museum ARC
Finished

Artists

Eitoku Kano, Yayoi Kusama, Anish Kapoor et al.
The sliding door paintings of the former Nikkoin Temple of Miidera Temple, sub-temple of Onjo-ji Temple, Otsu, Shiga prefecture, decorated every room of the grand hall in ink drawings of the Kano school. In 1892 Rokuro Hara bought the Nikkoin Temple and reconstructed it near his home in Shinagawa, later to be donated to Gokokuji Temple and now known as the Gekko-den (Important Cultural Property). But the sliding doors of this temple were retained and preserved as part of the Rokuro Hara Collection. This exhibition provides a special exposition of the “Orchid”, “Tiger” and “Birds and Flowers” depictions of these screens in a space designed to replicate that of its original construction.
