Finished

Artists

Max Ernst, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, Horst Jansen, Ernst Fuchs et al.
The German literature scholar Suehiro Tanemura helped spark the mannerist movement in Japan with his 1966 co-translation of Gustav René Hocke’s “Die Welt als Labyrinth” (The World as a Labyrinth) with Sumiko Yagawa. He later worked as a critic, demonstrating encyclopedic knowledge in a range of fields including eroticism, alchemy, and vampirism. In addition to introducing many German-language authors of art criticism to Japan, he wrote passionately about Japanese artists who appealed to his unique and discerning eye, such as the painters Yosuke Inoue and Genpei Akasegawa and the choreographer Tatsumi Hijikata. Through motifs including “spy box of dreams,” “ruin and eros,” “magical bodies,” and “reverse anatomy,” this exhibition of works from Japan and around the world explores the labyrinth of art as seen from Tanemura’s perspective.
