“Marilyn and Einstein – In Praise of Mythical Icons”

Intermediatheque
Finished
Tracing the impact of techniques of reproduction and expanded communication networks in the post-war era which led to the unprecedented diffusion of images of celebrities, leading them to become mythologized as if deities separate from reality, this exhibition attempts to bridge the gap between the fantasied image and the individual themselves through the material objects which embody their touch. Starting with the gorgeous pearl necklace Joe DiMaggio bought at the famous jewelry store Mikimoto in order to offer it to Marilyn Monroe upon their visit to Japan, focuses on such things this show connecting icons with their virtual image, and gathers the heritage of the postwar Pop era. From Andy Warhol to Mason Williams’ impressive Bus (1967), the witty and audacious full-scale reproduction of Northern America’s famous Greyhound Bus, to the “Einstein Elevator”, used by the great scientist at University of Tokyo in 1922, this exhibition, highlights the 20th Century as a major turning point in the history of images, and provides an opportunity to reflect upon this heritage and our will to possess the elusive through their iconification.
