RongRong & Inri
From their base in Beijing, the Chinese-Japanese unit RongRong & Inri continue to exhibit across the world and here present their “Tsumari Story” series first featured in Echigo-Tsumari in 2012, with recent additions of experimental prints. Here the unique story of this distinctive district with its deep culture and powerful landscapes is caught in this photographic series which draws on the origins of “Tsumari” from the word “donzumari”, meaning the end of the line, perhaps a symbol of the island nation of Japan at the far East of the world. Drawing on the phrase that “I have found the love I have been looking for at the end of the line” this work depicts the daily lives of men, women and children in a challenge to the erasure of distance and the ever increasing standardization encountered in today’s world.
