Babel (words)

Tokyu Theatre Orb
Finished
Choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, two major forces in the world of contemporary dance, present “Babel (words),” a new work selected by director Ryuichi Sakamoto himself for Sapporo International Art Festival 2014. Referencing the Bible’s Old Testament story of “The Tower of Babel,” this performance by dancers and musicians from more than ten countries sharply and sometimes humorously depicts issues of ethnography, territory, language, and national identity. Sculptor Antony Gormley provides five huge frames as stage props, in which performers change formations, creating invisible walls and borders that divide the self from the other in arrangements such as territories, encampments, and circles. This is the last installment in Cherkaoui’s three-part series that also includes “Foi” and “Myth.”
