Rei Naito
To see is to believe. Something is as it appears. To look is to project. And to realize that what you have gazed into, has also gazed quietly back into you. Rei Naito’s work is so very calm. Objects verging on the intangible, nascent color palettes, placed “just so” in space. The work breathes life into the space. In Naito’s practice that at the verge of the imperceptible is nudged ever-so-slightly towards us, just enough for us to sense a change in its presence. In this exhibition we see Rei Naito’s latest sculptural and two-dimensional work in the 1930s Art Deco former residence and guest house with its patina of age and inhabitation, and the pristine new white cube exhibition space. We look to see, with bated breath we wait — but it’s fleeting. Yet there is a sense of certainty. It is there gazing quietly at us. Disbelief is suspended. And this is a joy: rediscovering affirmation in the world.
