Yu Yasuda
With a unique contemporary aesthetic, through the medium of oil painting Yu Yasuda creates fluid worlds liberated from pre-existing concepts of time and space, adding his own original touches and layers of color to evoke other-worldly scenes in which space and time seem to blend together in shimmers of warm air. Throughout his career Yasuda has painted scenes of the imagination lacking concrete elements such as definite places or people, but in recent years his work has turned toward even more abstract expressions. “Thinking about colors and their relationships to each other, I examine the necessity and meaning of my brushwork, repeatedly attempting what I can and cannot do in a conscious way that has ultimately led my work to take the form of landscapes.” His works simultaneously draw the viewer more deeply into their worlds and stimulate thoughts of scenes that extend beyond them, suggesting subconscious or prophetic realms within our psyches. The title of this exhibition, the artist’s first solo show in roughly three years, refers to “in-between scenes” that “do not insist on what they portray, but try to form connections with the viewer.” Around ten oil paintings of various sizes are displayed.
