Tsuyoshi Sera
Tsuyoshi Sera’s drawing of a girl with a frog face in a wooden frame is wrapped up in gentleness, as if enveloped by a lovely lace. In Sera’s works, lace is draped, buried, and sometimes stripped away in images based on personal experiences and memory. The particularly alive— that is, the forms of life that exist now, have always been a subject of Sera’s works, which explore the repetition of life and death since ancient times.

Lace, a hallmark of Sera’s current work, originated in ancient Egypt. It later spread to Europe, where it was used as a decoration for armor and was in higher demand among men than women. It started out as a possession of the privileged classes, but came to be used widely in fashion with the development of manufacturing technology. It is now a staple of women’s lingerie, to the extent that its presence in our lives often goes unnoticed. Lace’s transformations are like those of an evolving art. In addition to evoking the romantic, feminine, prim, and sexy, lace’s delicate appearance and unique effects of light are sources of inspiration. Its fragile and detailed stitching reminds us of human existence, while its ordered geometric patterns recall mandalas beckoning us into an eternally expanding universe.
