Hoan Kosugi
Known for the gentleness of his Japanese paintings, Kosugi Hoan started out as a Western-style artist, studying in France and western Europe. This journey reawakened his appreciation for Eastern art, and upon returning to Japan he researched Japanese painting materials and Chinese classics. He later developed an original style of warmth-filled ink paintings and tranquil color works. From oil paintings to ink on hemp paper, some 90 works selected for the exhibition trace the shift in Kosugi’s interest from Western to Eastern culture and the transformations leading to the establishment of his own style.
