This photography series examines Ala Kachuu, the Kyrgyzstani practice of kidnapping women and girls and forcing them into marriage. Confronting this reality, Noriko Hayashi’s pictures vividly depict the stories of these women, conveying their grace and bravery in the face of injustice. The series goes beyond mere documentary, attesting to the power to deciding one’s own fate, having hope for the future, and the dignity of being human.
