Artists

Shinzaburo Takeda
Mexico of the 1930s caught the imagination of many European and American artists and ensued a strong influence upon the art scene. Likewise Takeda was also to be enchanted by the country in later decades and began his early career in Mexico City. But it was his encounter with the historic city of Oaxaca and its native culture which instilled in Takeda the determination to carry his practice forward. This exhibition follows his earliest motifs of Seto and Okinawa, his print and picture books began in Mexico and his major painting works created in Oaxaca, along with the work of Oaxaca based artists who held a close exchange with him at the time. In addition this show also examines his encounter with Taro Okamoto and Takeda’s contribution to Okamoto’s famed mural “The Myth of Tomorrow”.
