These oil-stick paintings on canvas, the main work of Stephan Baumkoetter, first appear as monochrome paintings but slowly reveal a constantly shifting color space, which both exposes and in turn conceals a wide spectrum of colors. While alluding to concepts of contingency, the impossibility of reproduction, impersonality, and anonymity derived from their materials, these paintings free us from linguistic consciousness and return us to the pure act of “seeing.”
