“If you want to learn, you must spend time, and really enjoy!” says Khvay, whose work is often filled with a sense of humor. This exhibition features the video “Enjoy My Sand,” in which the artist wears large horns made with human hair and carries people he meets on the beach in Singapore. This “Cow Taxi” series continues a project of Khvay has worked on at residency in Asakusa with at Tokyo Wonder Site, as well as in Phnom Penh. “Enjoy My Sand” is a humorous critique of the geopolitical and economic questions of land and resource management, in this case the export of river sand from Cambodia to Singapore, where the coastlines are constantly expanded for recreation. To offer signals, symbolism, and questions in many layers engaging seemingly absurd acts of performance lies in the core of his artistic practice.
