Kimio Kawaguchi— An Alchemist of Painting

Artists

Kimio Kawaguchi
This exhibition looks back on the career of the oil painter Kimio Kawaguchi with around 90 of his works, from his early to most recent pieces. Kawaguchi’s paintings are marked by classical techniques and fantastical images. A student of 15th century Old Masters such as Bruegel and Bosch, Kawaguchi’s practice of combining tempera and oil paint is thoroughly rooted in tradition. Meanwhile, his harmonious compositions upend perceptions of the passage of time and spatial realism, depicting subjects such as ships and meteors floating through space and lawns resembling water surfaces. Featuring Kawaguchi’s 10 cm by 10 cm “miniatures,” this comprehensive retrospective presents uniquely realized figurative works that combine fantasy and classical techniques rarely found in Japan.
