Artwork by people with mental illnesses and other disabilities is drawing increased attention in recent years in Japan and around the world. These artists may face obstacles or lack formal art education, but often they create the works they want to in the ways they want to, giving their art an inimitable appeal. Rendered with surprising perspectives and materials, repeated motifs, and uninhibited imaginations, this type of art is currently on the rise and demonstrates that disability can also come with gifts of artistic genius. Realized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama, this exhibition presents incredible works by twelve “outsider” artists recommended by curators and experts from across Japan.
