Kou Nan
Kou Nan is a group of three young artists. In an absurd performance and installation titled “Drawing Big Foot,” Kou Nan attempts to distinguish between artificial movements and natural objects. They started this project from the idea that if an elephant could paint an elephant, Big Foot could do the same. Other inspirations include Gutai painter Kazuo Shiraga’s foot painting and the story of Sesshu (1420-1506), one of the most famous sumi ink painters in Japan. As a boy at a Buddhist school, Sesshu was chastised and tied to a tree. He used his foot to wipe his tears and draw a picture of a mouse with them.

Other works by Kou Nan also have provocative titles, such as “Ukiwa (Floating Ring) Noguchi,” “Orgy of Hayanie Tribe,” “Hard Rikyu and Soft Rikyu,” and so on. Paradoxically, realism, traditionalism, and a principle called “art for art’s sake” are at the heart of their works. Drawing on inspiration, the internet, spontaneity, and footwork, Kou Nan mixes up conservative and the avant-garde cultures and skirts around the boundaries of the art world in Japan.
