Imari Ware: The Ko-Kutani Style

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
Ko-Kutani pottery comes in a variety of styles, from lightly colored geometric patterns on Chinese porcelain, to vivid Chinese paintings, to designs in the deep colors of Japanese kimono sleeves and folding screens. Among these, Ko-Kutani dishes with their rich colors are some of the most eye-catching. These stunning works combine bold compositions and color tones with intricate patterns of lines and white space, each displaying its own brilliance. This exhibition presents around 80 works, mainly masterpiece Ko-Kutani dishes with “iroe” over-glaze colors, along with other Imari ware from the same period. It introduces the diversity of pottery from the mid-17th century, an era that saw the birth of the iroe technique and a revolution in pottery technology.
