This exhibition decodes, through the preliminary drawings, sketches, and drafts for Nihonga, both what impels artists to create and the processes of trial and error by which they do so. It presents a wide range of works, from paintings by the early modern Kano School to work by modern and contemporary artists, to consider the various stories of creating a painting. Work by Kyosai Kawanabe, Seiho Takeuchi, Bakusen Tsuchida, Kagaku Murakami, Yonosuke Kikuchi, and faculty members in てぇ Department of Japanese Painting will be displayed.
