Lithography is a technique that blossomed in France from the 19th century to the early 20th century. Later, this technique once again came into the limelight from the mid-1940s to the 1970s when artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall produced a countless number of masterpieces. It is the lithography studio “Idem Paris” that has inherited this technique and the tradition of creation in Montparnasse and continued to proactively collaborate with artists since the 1990s in the tradition of more than one hundred year history of lithography. In recent years, French artists such as JR, Jean-Michel Alberola and Carole Benzaken, as well as the American film director David Lynch, have been attracted to the magnetism of this studio. In addition, Miwa Yanagi also produced lithographs for the first time there this year. This exhibition consists of about 130 lithographs produced by these 20 contemporary artists in Idem Paris.

This exhibition will be linked to “Romancier” (meaning “novelist” in French), the latest novel of Maha Harada. In this book, a protagonist who has come to Paris from Japan encounters various people through Idem Paris. It ends with a scene of a fictional exhibition in Japan showing works produced at Idem. This novel presents a unique idea that makes it possible for readers to experience an actual exhibition jumping out from the book’s pages.
